Janine Abraham (who trained at the Ecole Camondo) and the Dutch interior designer Dirk Jan Rol established their agency in 1957. If the couple experimented with traditional materials, aluminium, plywood, and rattan, they favoured a new repertoire of structured and elegant shapes, such as the armchair Soleil which won the gold medal at the Brussels Unversal Exposition in 1958. This chair charmed Jean Royère who had the palace of the Shah of Iran furnished with twelve examples of it.
