Invalid armchair, Paris (?), c. 1720

This invalid armchair is equipped with three cogwheels operated by two crank handles. The back could be inclined using two stays. A footrest and tray could be attached to the front. The upholstery of the armchair with its removable seat cushion was particularly well made and has survived in very good condition.

In his book published in 1770 and entitled Principes de l’art du tapissier (Principles of Upholstery), Jean-François Bimont described this style of seat covering as “cartouche” upholstery. The central piece of red leather is bordered by yellow leather pieces assembled with a rib. The overall upholstery is studded with gilt nails.
