Axel Salto became the artistic director of the Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory in 1934 and won the grand prize at the Paris International Exposition of 1937. While simultaneously continuing his work as a draughtsman and wood engraver, he exhibited his ceramics all over Europe. The observation of nature was his primary source of inspiration with forms of fruits and plants. Oxblood red glaze is also characteristic of his work.
