With a presentation based on the ornamental theme of the classical-style arabesque, this room proposes a reflection on interior decoration in the later days of the Ancien Régime, combining its various components in an “exploded” display in which each element is autonomous. The room is divided into two sections presenting a more or less luxurious interior design. One section shows a decoration of painted panels – a unique work by a decorative painter – while the other features a less costly decoration in the form of wallpaper, designed for a broader clientele. Marie Antoinette’s clock from the Palais des Tuileries, placed on a low cabinet by Jean-Henri Riesener, harmonizes with painted compositions that recall the decoration of the queen’s boudoir at Fontainebleau.
