In 1879, the collector and printer Charles Gillot asked his friend Eugène Grasset to design the decoration and furniture of the main rooms in his mansion on Rue Madame in Paris. Grasset designed simple forms that he covered with a wealth of ornamentation combining naturalism and fantasy. This room contains the fireplace from the original mansion and furniture from the dining room; it also presents a walnut dining room suite commissioned from Grasset in 1905 by Charles Gillot’s daughter, Louise-Marcelle Seure, in the decorative style of the mansion on Rue Madame. The walls are decorated with earthenware and porcelain plates and dishes created between 1860 and 1890 by Grasset’s contemporaries, who drew inspiration from Japanese and Turkish ceramics.
