The style that developed in the 1830s and 1840s under the influence of Romanticism was based on nostalgia for the period from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century and a desire to break with classical codes. In 1830, the designer Claude-Aimé Chenavard created his “Renaissance Vase” and everyday objects began to be decorated with an infinite variety of Gothic motifs from the Middle Ages. The fashion for filling bourgeois homes with small objects made of porcelain, bronze or glass was boosted by the industrialization of mass production.

Part of the 19th-century galleries will be closed from 25 September to 30 November 2023 for renovation.
